Mara Foster
Vinnie's mother. Co-owns Embers & Ashes with her older sister, where Vinnie sometimes works. Vinnie is close with her mother. They have so much in common. They both love gardening, working with herbs, and creating new spells. Mara is an instant source of comfort for her, with her advice, calming energy, encouragement or quiet spell work. Her mother is the one person she feels she can always trust no matter what.

Victor Foster
Father. She was only an infant when he died. They never really got the chance to bond. She knows, unlike her mother and sister, that he's a spirit haunting them. She tries to communicate with him but so far hasn't yielded much results. She wants to know more about him, to get to know him so desperately. She knows he wasn't always a good man, but she believes what her mother says that there was good in him. Vinnie just wants to know for herself. Maybe one day.

Andy Foster
Vinnie's older sister. Works at Embers & Ashes with her. They have always had a love/hate relationship. Vinnie sees Andy as better than she is--prettier, more powerful, more popular--so she is envious of her. As siblings, there was some rivalry, with Andy being fully aware of Vinnie's jealousy and envy. Vinnie is sure she does that on purpose just to tick her off. However, when it all comes down to it, Vinnie loves her sister and would do anything for her. They are family and will always stick together.

Mason Davis
Godfather & pseduo-father figure. Instructor. Mason taught her magic, even though her potential for great magic was different from Andy's raw talent. When it was clear Vinnie did not possess the same level of skill, Mason shifted her studies to what she exhibited the most skill for--herbology and plant magic. She was thankful for uncovering her love for floweres and plants. She studied quickly. Mason is always the one she turns to for advice, and she loves and appreciates his encouragement.

Casey Jennings
Best friend & unrequited crush. Vinnie didn't think she would fall for Casey the way she had. She's cool, rebellious--everything Vinnie wishes she could be. She feels bad that Casey's had some hard times, so she doesn't mind letting her stay over or inviting her to dinner. She's almost become part of the family. She doesn't want to say it outloud because she's sure she'd get rejected and teased mercilessly, but she thinks she might be in love with her best friend.

Neoma Myles
Friend & co-worker. Unrequited crush. For as long as Vinnie has known her, she's had a crush on Neoma. She knows there's no chance with her, but she can't help but think about her. Neoma is very beautiful and strong and Vinnie admires her so much. However, Neoma's use of empathy sometimes makes her uncomfortable because she hates anyone feeling all her unrequited feelings, as well as her insecurities. All in all, Neoma is like family and she appreciates her friendship.

CJ Slater
Good friend. CJ is one of her closest friends. They've known each other since they were children, though they didn't spend much time together when they were younger. As pre-teens and teenagers, they bonded over their mutual love of books. Vinnie developed a small crush on CJ, but it was short-lived. She still admires the hell out of CJ. She and Lang are among her favorite friends to smoke the pot she cultivates on lazy afternoons.

Lang Maddox
Friend. Vinnie used to hang out at the Book Ends bookstore and that's where she met Lang. They hit it off and they hang out now and again, along with CJ. The three of them talk about literature, comics, and lots of other stuff--and sometimes smoke the weed that she cultivates. He's a nervous guy, but pretty cool for a werewolf.

Malcolm Carter
Family friend. Her mother's close friend/lover. Carter has grown closer to Vinnie than he has with Andy, because Vinnie is a lot more receptive than Andy seems to be. Carter's a trustworthy sort of guy. They're working toward getting to know each other better. They both seem to like the same kind of sitcoms, tv shows, and movies from the 80's, so when he visits the Foster's for movie night, they almost always agree on the same thing.

Vinnie’s favorite color is green.

Vinnie still lives with her mother, and is happy they have finally settled in a nice house. 

She has a knack for botany and magic involving plants. She has her own garden, in a greenhouse out back.

She constantly feels inadequate compared to her older sister, Andy, when it comes to power, magic, and most other things. She takes some consolation in the fact she’s better with plant magic and can actually cook, whereas her sister pales in comparison.

Her favorite junk food is donuts. Any kind. She is not picky.

Vinnie doesn’t remember her dad and has always seen her godfather Mason as a father figure, and has more than a couple times referred to him as “Dad”.

She has a major sweet tooth, with anything chocolate being her top pick for sweets.

She loves Dr. Pepper.

When Vinnie was a child, she had a cat plushie she took with her everywhere she went. She still has it, though it sits now on a shelf above her bed, retired but still well loved.

Vinnie has started taking online college courses, though she hasn’t decided yet what degree she wants. She’s thinking something with business.

She loves herbal tea.

She can go for days doing nothing but lounging around, watching Netflix in her PJs, or reading books.

Comedy and romance and fantasy are her favorite genres.

She has a large collection of classic novels and children’s books. Her favorite is Peter Pan.

Vinnie used to write in diaries when she was younger. She still has all of them somewhere in storage--the later ones contain content similar to that of a book of shadows.

Her formal book of shadows contains mostly information on herbs and plant magic, as well as potion recipes. A more informal book of shadows is kept online on a blog she manages.

Her knowledge of plants and herbs gives her an advantage in making healing potions, salves, poultices, and more. They sell them in the shop.

Vinnie hasn’t had much experience with relationships or sex, but she definitely prefers females to males.

She has one photograph of her as a baby with her father, and she keeps it in her book of shadows. It’s one of her most cherished possessions.

While she likes being alone sometimes, she hates being lonely.

She likes all sorts of music but finds herself gravitating more towards alternative music.

People who are born of a magical family with inherent magical talents are known as witches. If your mother was a witch, or your father was a witch (in some cases both) or some combination of and you were born with magical abilities–you’re a witch too–whether or not you’re male, female, or any variation of any gender.

Those who are born without magic or from a non-magical line who learns how to perform spells can also be called a witch, but they are generally not as powerful, nor have the family connections. There are, however, always exceptions to this. Someone who has learned magic can also call themselves a wizard or sorcerer though it’s not that common.

Warlock does not exclusively refer to a male or masculine witch. The term warlock  is from the Old English wǣrloga meaning “oathbreaker” or “deceiver”. Warlocks are witches of a morally gray or dark conscience. They have either betrayed fellow witches before, or have done terrible things within the community. Their power is usually very dark, very concentrated, and they have no scruples in using it for their own purposes. Warlocks are not always considered evil, but they do have those tendencies more often than not.

Witches possess a range of many different inherent abilities. These talents tend to pass from parent to child in varying degrees of potency. Powers and skills vary between individual witches and even family groups. One talent that all witches possess is basic spellcraft and it can be learned even by those born without magic.

Witches from magical families are considered human, but in addition to magical talent, they possess longevity. They are certain not immortal and are susceptible to human weaknesses, but they age much slower and tend to live longer. A typical lifespan can be up to 150 years, though there are very few who live so long.

Many hereditary witches form covens, and many of these covens are connected among the communities. Some of these covens act as governing bodies to the magical world–they try to keep dangerous practitioners at bay and there are covens completely devoted to managing and correcting magical mishaps within the community. Most covens prefer to keep themselves secret to the outside world for fear of persecution. They tend to operate as schools, academies, safe houses, halfway houses, institutions, charities, and the like as a cover for what they really are. 

Some witches and their covens do not fear persecution and are completely open to the public eye–but they tend to be dismissed as religious organizations, or else not taken seriously. Any persecution received from the outside world is usually easily taken care of with a few redirection spells.

The Kindheart coven was founded in the very late 1700's by a group of four sisters. They had learned talents in listening to the earth, in using the herbs to heal and soothe. They were naturally gifted, their mother having this talent as well, which she learned from her mother and so on. They did not, however, call themselves witches. Their mother feared persecution and so kept her talents quiet to most, and helping those who had a knack for knowing she and her daughters were more than meets the eye.

Her children were much bolder than she was, and they faced persecution and ridicule head on but they formed a coven and embraced their talents. Soon sought out others with like-minded desires and soon, they had at least a dozen members of both men and women. All of them were talented in different ways, and all of them were committed to using their talents to train and help others. They chose the name “Kindheart” to signify that it takes kind hearts to do great things. Their motto in recent years has always been some variation of  “sometimes miracles are just good people with kind hearts”.

They eventually made a name for themselves throughout the magical and supernatural communities. Their order produced great and powerful witches, eventually branching out to have contacts in other countries as well, and helping out even more witches and supernatural creatures seeking their help.

Their main coven headquarters is in London England and today, the Kindheart Coven operates within many facets--as a school for young witches, a halfway house for those rehabilitating for magical mishaps or addictions, a refuge for those seeking a safe, secure place from persecution or whatever else may intend to harm them. The witches of the coven are still dedicated to helping those who need their help, no matter who or what they might be. They are always welcoming new members.

The city/town or country in which these fictional places are located (unless stated otherwise) is flexible for RP purposes, but I personally canon them as southeastern United States, in a fictional city called New Ashton, Virginia, located nearer to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Until I sort out a canon book verse and utilize the city and setting properly, I'll keep the city/town flexible.
